The Kestrel 5500 Pocket Weather Tracker is an environmental meter from Kestrel. It is a mini weather station in itself. The Kestrel 5500 updated from the Kestrel 4500 in November 2015. That said ... functionally, you are not getting more environmental features. So don’t feel the need to upgrade unless you find the other necessary exciting changes.
 
New features of the Kestrel 5500 over the previous Kestrel 4500 series:

The battery door is at the back, sealed away from the motherboard, should its leakage in the battery as was common with the entire 4000 series

These added features make the 5500 Kestrel Meter the choice for military professionals, HAZMAT teams, and flight crews. Like all of the new 5000 series, it can store a maximum of approximately 10,000 data points.
If you select the Bluetooth link model kestrel, the meter includes custom communication software designed to quickly and easily set your data transmission frequency, download recorded data, graph data, and transfer data to other applications. There is no longer a need to purchase a separate interface, the new Kestrel meters with Bluetooth include the necessary software for wireless communication with a range of up to 100 feet with a clear line of sight (walls or obstacles will affect this range).
Note, you will need a Dongle. A solution if you do not have this with you would be to upload your data to your mobile smartphone and email it to yourself and open it on your Mac/PC. In the 4000 series, the Dongle was not necessary.
All meters in the 5000 series have both a bright green backlight, which is ideal for high sunlight conditions, and a night vision preserving backlighting. The red night vision (NV) backlighting incorporates an optical filter to reduce overall brightness and minimize blue and green spectrum light to preserve night vision. (Note: This 'night vision' is not compatible with night vision equipment.) Basically, with the red backlight, your eyes do not have to adjust when looking from the meter to the horizon in nighttime use.
This Kestrel 5500 with Kestrel LINK will work together with the new Bushnell rangefinders you have been reading about. It is expected to be released in 2016. It will also work with many other applications in the market for ballistics and meteorological functions. It is the most popular for ballistic applications due to the compass with crosswind functions.
