Example of magnetic field variation with distance

Magnetic flux density values (B, in microteslas, µT), measured at one meter height above the ground, near an electric transport line (the tower is not represented to scale). It is observed that the values of B significantly decrease as the distance to the line increases. Thus, directly above the line, B could reach values of up to 6 µT; at 15 meters from the line, B would be halved, and for distances greater than 30 meters, B would be in the order of tenths of microtesla.

This radiation counter PCE-EMF 823 performs measurements in two ranges in Teslas and Gauss. One gauss (G) is a unit of magnetic field in the Centimeter-Gram-Second (CGS) system of induction, magnetic force, and magnetic field intensity, named after the German mathematician and physicist Carl Friedrich Gauss. One gauss is equal to 0.1 micro Teslas and equivalent to 10^-4 Tesla. Additionally, the Earth's magnetic field is approximately ½ gauss or 0.5 x 10^-4 T.

The Tesla unit of measurement in the International System for magnetic induction was named in honor of Nikola Tesla, and is equal to one Weber per square meter (Wb/m²). It is the uniform magnetic induction that, distributed normally over a surface of 1 square meter, produces a total magnetic flux of 1 Weber (W) through that surface.
