Portable turbidimeter according to ISO 7027 (with two automatic measurement ranges of 0 to 50 NTU and 50 to 1000 NTU)
The PCE-TUM 20 turbidity meter is a portable meter with a large display that meets all requirements for measuring turbidity on-site. The measurement range of the turbidity meter is from 0 to 1000 NTU, divided into two automatic ranges to increase accuracy. The simple keyboard allows the PCE-TUM 20 turbidity meter to be easy to operate. It uses an LED light source with a wavelength of 830 nm from the electromagnetic spectrum, which is invisible to the human eye. Since the measurement is performed in the visible light range, it is not significantly affected by color staining. The placement of the photodiodes at angles of 180º and 90º allows the use of transmitted light for high ranges and diffused light for low measurement ranges. The calibration standards of 0 and 100 NTU included in the shipment allow for calibration of the PCE-TUM 20 turbidity meter at any time. The PCE-TUM 20 turbidity meter complies with all regulations according to EN 27027 and ISO 7027.

Unidades
The turbidimeter displays the measurement result in NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Unit). This unit is specified in the ISO standard. NTU is identical to FTU (Formazine Turbidity Unit). In practice, two other units are used to measure turbidity: JTU and SiO2. JTU (Jackson Turbidity Unit) corresponds to 19 times the NTU, while Silica Unit corresponds to 7.5 times the NTU.
Measurement principles
In the turbidimeter, an infrared LED works with 850 nm as the light source. A photodiode positioned at a 90º angle to the light beam receives the light reflected by the particles in the measurement solution. (Scattered light or nephelometric measurement method for the lower measurement range.) For the upper measurement range, another photodiode is located opposite. (The measurement is performed by the transmitted light method.) The meter thus determines turbidity in NTU (FTU). Thanks to the use of an infrared LED, it is possible to perform measurements in colored liquids, such as red wine.
