The two photometers for Ca and Mg hardness provide results in mg/l, while the model for total water hardness transmits the result in different units: ppm (or mg/l), °D German (German degree of hardness, see in the table), °f French, and °E English.

The summation parameter of total hardness is basically extracted to assess total hardness (sum of the two types of Mg and Ca ions). This is necessary, for example, to prevent corrosion damage in cooling lines and installations. On the other hand, the degree of hardness serves as an indicator of manure in water (a healthy ratio of Ca/Mg ions is 4:1).
